Anyone who knows of Jeremy Cowart would be instantly and easily impressed by his stunning portfolio of celebrities and athletes. Being on tour with Britney Spears, photographing Taylor Swift, hanging out backstage at the Country Music Awards, it is easy to imagine the rock star photographer life Jeremy must live. However, Jeremy will be the first to admit that while all this looks good in a portfolio, his career has not been the glamorous life it appears to be. ”…it seems I have led this rock star life, but that is really not true.”
While not discrediting that he has been blessed with a certain amount of success, Jeremy attributes a lot of it to reaching out to people, taking chances, building relationships early in his career, and sometimes just being in the right place at the right time. When recounting his story of photographing Sting, Jeremy explained how it was a brief session that would not have happened unless he took a chance and seized the opportunity.
The entire seminar, based on his recent DVD LifeFinder, was a nice balance of instruction and inspiration. Jeremy started his 8 hour session, talking about his beginnings, his interest in art, and his transition from graphic design to photography. Later he followed with a composition discussion, some Photoshop techniques and a bit of his post process. The late afternoon was a creative topic about being unique and finding your own personal style that stands out.
But surely, Jeremy must have told us about how awesome and fulfilling it is to photograph models, celebrities, and music stars right? Wrong. Perhaps the best and most inspirational thing about Jeremy is his work, actions, and beliefs on giving back and helping others. The last part of this day Jeremy spoke of his humanitarian work and using his talents to reach out to others who need help, covering his projects like Help Portrait and Voices of Haiti.
Jeremy is truly genuine in his pursuit of helping others. When you hear him speak of his work, you can tell it is something that is truly important to him. When comparing his work, he states how helping others is what is really fulfilling to him and part of the legacy he wishes to pass on. “…these are what I will tell my kids about, the stuff that matters”
Jeremy Cowart is easily the most humble, likable and down to earth person I have ever met. He is a great speaker and a wonderful teacher. His transparency in teaching and inspiring others has been really valuable to me. Maria and I were so happy to attend and will definitely jump at the chance to see him in the future.
